The Court of Appeal has set June 5, 2025, to deliver judgement on one of the convicted accomplices of notorious criminal Ataa Ayi, who has appealed his 35-year sentencing.
The convict, Yaw Asante Agyekum, who was sentenced by an Accra high court in December 2002, has already served 23 years of the 35-year sentence.
The convict, who didn't have a lawyer at the time of his conviction, was charged with the crime of conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
It is the case of his lawyer, George Bernard Shaw, that there was no evidence linking his client to the many robberies carried out by Ataa Ayi.
Addressing journalists after court proceedings on Monday, George Bernard Shaw further argued that the only link prosecutors could draw between Ataa Ayi and his client was to find the phone numbers of the notorious criminal on the mobile phone of the mechanic.
This, he believes, was unfair and rigorously pushing for the court to overturn the ruling.
