Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito says he is “very happy” with the newly introduced minimum wage for players in the Ghana Premier League, though he feels the initial amount is low.

On Wednesday, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced that players in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) will earn a minimum monthly net salary of GHS 1,500 under a new policy aimed at improving player welfare and professionalising the domestic game.

Reacting to the news on Thursday, Karim Zito said: “I'm very happy when I heard it this morning through the media, but I felt GHS 1,500 is even small. But when you want to begin something, you have to begin with the lower and then once you are new, then you are increasing it.”

The initiative, which also covers the Division One League and Women’s Premier League, follows consultations with clubs and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG).

“I'm very happy. I thank the PFAG, which I'm a member, and then the GFA collaborating, and then bringing you up this fantastic idea.”-Zito added.

Along with the GH¢1,500 minimum for GPL players, the new framework sets a minimum net monthly salary of GH¢700 for Division One League and Women’s Premier League players.

The minimum wage requirement will apply to all contracts signed during the next registration window, while players already under contract will see the changes take effect at the start of the 2026/2027 league season.
