The Republic of Paraguay has solidified its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara with the announcement of plans to open a Consulate General in the region.
The decision was revealed during a meeting in Rabat between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Paraguay’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rubén Ramírez Lezcano.
Mr Lezcano reaffirmed Paraguay’s full support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and endorsed the autonomy initiative proposed by the Kingdom in 2007, describing it as the only serious, credible, and realistic solution to the regional dispute.
He further announced that Paraguay would soon open a Consulate General in Morocco’s southern provinces, signalling clear and tangible support for the Kingdom’s territorial integrity.
This latest development follows Paraguay’s 2014 decision to withdraw recognition of the self-proclaimed entity and builds on a series of joint statements and political consultations that have strengthened ties between the two nations.

Paraguay’s move is viewed as a strong political gesture reflecting growing support across Latin America for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and the deepening friendship and cooperation between Rabat and Asunción.
