President John Mahama will today, Monday, November 17, swear in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s new Chief Justice, days after Parliament overwhelmingly approved his nomination.
The President first nominated Justice Baffoe-Bonnie on September 23, 2025, highlighting his extensive judicial career across the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court, as well as his decades of service on the Bench.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has been Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, following the suspension and later dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on November 10, he pledged an open, bipartisan leadership style and reaffirmed his resolve to safeguard judicial independence and expand access to justice.
Parliament subsequently confirmed his appointment on November 13 with 163 votes in favour and 69 against, clearing the final hurdle ahead of today’s swearing-in ceremony.
