The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced stricter performance monitoring for power transmission and distribution agencies in 2026, stressing that inefficiencies in the system can no longer be tolerated.
Addressing heads of agencies at a strategic planning retreat, the Energy Minister identified power transmission as a critical weak link that must be strengthened urgently to support growing electricity demand and renewable energy integration.
“Our ability to evacuate power from generation sources and transmit it efficiently across the country is fundamental to system reliability,” he said, adding that delays in transmission infrastructure upgrades must end.
He also expressed concern about persistent challenges in the distribution sector, particularly high losses, weak revenue mobilisation, and poor customer service at ECG and NEDCo.
“ECG and NEDCo must become more efficient, financially sustainable, and customer-focused,” Dr Jinapor stressed.
According to him, agencies will be held accountable against clear benchmarks in loss reduction, billing efficiency, revenue collection, and service delivery as Ghana prepares for increased electricity demand driven by industrial expansion and the 24-hour economy policy.
