Chief of Protocol and Communication to the Ga Mantse, Ambassador Sylvester Parker-Allotey, has said that the process of renaming the country’s main international airport should be guided by extensive consultations with the Regional House of Chiefs.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Wednesday, he said that while he supports the renaming of the airport, the decision on what name to adopt should be reached through consensus among traditional leaders.
“I agree that the name of the airport would have to be changed but the change should be something which should be done in consultation with the Regional House of Chiefs, where we have our traditional leaders who can come to a consensus on the type of name to be used," he said.
He suggested that naming the airport after a respected traditional figure such as King Tackie Tawiah would be fitting, noting the late overlord’s significant contributions as a chief and leader within the Ga community.
“I personally think that somebody like King Tackie Tawiah has done a lot as a chief and as an overlord of Accra, and if his name were to be used, it would be very appropriate,” he said.
However, the Ambassador acknowledged that if reaching consensus among the chiefs may prove challenging. In that event, he expressed support for the government's proposal to adopt Accra International Airport as the new name, reflecting the airport’s location on Ga land.
