The management of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has confirmed the death of a final-year student, Godfred Akomaning, who was pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering.
In a statement issued on March 24, the university said the student passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026, while receiving treatment at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital.
According to the statement, a medical report from the facility identified the cause of death as "organophosphate poisoning", a condition that occurs when the body reacts to toxic chemical compounds commonly found in certain agricultural substances and industrial agents.
The body has since been deposited at the Sefwi Anwiaso Community Hospital mortuary.
Management of UENR expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the wider university community, describing the loss as a painful moment for the institution.
The university further indicated that investigations would be conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
It assured that updates would be provided once all the facts are determined.
UENR also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for both students and staff.
