The water level of Burkina Faso’s Bagre Dam is nearing its spillage threshold, raising concerns over possible flooding along Ghana’s White Volta basin.

The dam’s water level currently stands at 234.48 metres, just below the expected spillage level of 234.75 metres.

Upper East Regional Director of NADMO, Rebecca Akolgo, said the agency is intensifying preparedness measures to minimise the impact of any potential spillage and prevent loss of life and property.

"The expected level of spillage is supposed to be 234.75 meters. Currently, we have 234.48, which means the level hasn't been hit yet, and so we are still anticipating the spillage at any moment from now," she said.

She added that “we have advised farmers and residents along the White Volta to immediately evacuate, and they have complied. They have moved to higher ground for safety."

According to Ms Akolgo, disaster volunteers and local divers have also been deployed to monitor vulnerable areas and prevent residents from venturing into unsafe locations.

NADMO has further identified temporary shelters and safe locations in vulnerable communities to accommodate residents who may be displaced by flooding.

Ms Akolgo, however, warned that farmers who are yet to harvest their crops could suffer significant losses if the dam spills.

She explained that flooding from a possible spillage could submerge farms and destroy crops, particularly those located close to the White Volta.

The annual spillage of the Bagre Dam has historically caused flooding downstream in Ghana, affecting farms, homes and livelihoods in communities along the White Volta.
