The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has warned residents living along the White Volta and other flood-prone areas in the North East Region to prepare for possible flooding following the planned spillage of Burkina Faso’s Bagré Dam.

According to NADMO, authorities responsible for the dam have officially notified Ghana that the spillage will begin on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

The organisation said the exercise is expected to increase the volume of water flowing downstream into Ghana through the White Volta River and its tributaries, potentially causing rising water levels in communities along riverbanks and low-lying areas.

In a statement, NADMO advised residents, farmers, fishermen, herdsmen and other persons who live or work around vulnerable areas to take precautionary measures to protect lives and property.

The organisation urged residents to relocate from flood-prone areas to safer locations before floodwaters arrive, while advising farmers to harvest crops early where necessary.

NADMO also cautioned the public against farming, fishing, grazing livestock or undertaking other activities within river channels and floodplains.

Residents have further been advised to move valuables, food supplies, livestock and farm equipment away from areas likely to be affected, and to avoid crossing flooded roads, rivers, streams or bridges.

The North East Regional NADMO office said district offices have been directed to intensify public education and sensitisation campaigns, particularly in communities located along the White Volta and other vulnerable waterways.

NADMO added that it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the dam spillage progresses.
