Security agencies have seized about 19 kilogrammes of gold linked to suspected drug money-laundering activities, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has disclosed.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 24, the Minister said the seizure formed part of the government’s intelligence-led campaign against illicit drug-trafficking networks and their financial assets.

According to him, the government’s strategy goes beyond arresting drug users and traffickers to identifying and freezing assets believed to have been acquired through the illegal trade.

“Our campaign is not just [targeted] at the users, but those who are bringing it,” he said.

“We’ll go down, using intelligence-led operations, to make sure that when we get them, we seize their assets or we taint their assets, freezing them while the prosecution is going on.”

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak said security agencies had recovered 73 assets suspected to be linked to illicit drugs, “with about 19 kilogrammes of gold seized in suspected drug money-laundering cases”.

He added that about GH¢6.9 million and $440,000 in cash associated with individuals suspected of involvement in the drug trade had been restrained.

The Minister said the measures were intended to dismantle the financial networks supporting drug trafficking and prevent suspects from benefiting from the proceeds of crime.

Between January 2025 and July 2026, security agencies seized more than 8,500 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs and about 45.4 million tramadol tablets.

A total of 217 arrests were made, while 165 prosecutions were initiated during the period.

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak commended the Narcotics Control Commission, the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies for their collaboration in the government’s fight against illicit drugs.
