The government has commissioned a new office complex for the Minerals Commission in Kumasi as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s mining regulatory institutions and improve service delivery in the sector.
The facility, commissioned through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, is expected to enhance the Commission’s operational efficiency and bring its services closer to mining companies, investors, communities and other stakeholders in the middle belt.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on behalf of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Deputy Minister Yusif Sulemana said the facility represented more than an investment in office infrastructure.

He described it as an investment in the institutional capacity required to regulate, manage and develop Ghana’s mineral resources effectively.

Mr Sulemana said the Minerals Commission plays a critical role in the mining sector, including regulating and managing mineral resources, administering mineral rights, monitoring mining operations, collecting data, advising on policy and enforcing government regulations.
He said a modern working environment would enable the Commission to improve its operations and the quality of services provided to investors, mining companies, communities and other stakeholders.

The Deputy Minister said government therefore viewed infrastructure not merely as a support system for the mining sector but as an important component of broader economic and social development.
Call for greater value from mineral resources
Mr Sulemana noted that Ghana has significant deposits of gold, bauxite, manganese and diamonds, as well as an expanding range of industrial and technology minerals.

He said the government’s responsibility was to ensure that the exploitation of these resources translated into meaningful economic benefits for Ghanaians.
“We must move beyond an economy where minerals are simply extracted and exported, towards one where mining stimulates infrastructure development, industrialisation, local enterprise, job creation and value addition,” he said.
He said a modern mining industry required strong regulatory institutions, reliable data systems, modern laboratories, effective inspection facilities and digital platforms to reduce delays and improve transparency.

Mr Sulemana urged the Minerals Commission to maintain high standards of professionalism, efficiency and technological capacity to support a modern and competitive mining industry.

Facility to strengthen decentralised operations
Speaking on behalf of the Ashantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI congratulated the management and staff of the Minerals Commission on the completion of the new facility.
He described the complex as a significant addition to Kumasi’s skyline and a reflection of the Ashanti Region’s rich mineral heritage.
According to him, the facility was more than an architectural achievement, describing it as a symbol of the growing importance of effective mineral governance to Ghana’s development.
He noted that the establishment of the Minerals Commission’s Kumasi office was intended to bring sustainable mineral management, policy enforcement and licensing closer to mining operations and stakeholders in the middle belt.

Minerals Commission pledges improved service delivery
Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Isaac Tandoh, described the commissioning as a major milestone in the Commission’s efforts to strengthen mineral governance and improve access to its services.

Mr Tandoh said the facility formed part of broader efforts to decentralise the Commission’s operations, modernise its systems and enhance regulatory effectiveness across the country.
He said the investment reflected the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that Ghana’s mineral resources were managed responsibly and sustainably.
Mr Tandoh added that the new facility would improve accessibility, efficiency and transparency in the delivery of the Commission’s mandate.
