The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is instituting measures to provide tight security at its national delegates conference in Kumasi on February 2.7 this year.
As part of the measures, 1,000 policemen will be drafted to take charge of security at the Baba Yara Stadium, venue for the conference.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Mr F.E Anto, told the Daily Graphic that his outfit was in the process of concluding negotiations with the Regional Police Command on security for the conference.
"We are strongly convinced that the number of policemen will be enough to control the situation for the day," he said.
Mr Anto stated that security was very important for such matters, especially as thousands of people might want to have a feel of what would go on.
He, however, indicated that not everybody would be allowed into the stadium to witness the event. According to him, only delegates and other accredited persons would enter the stadium.
"If we are to open the gates to the stadium for everybody, it would be difficult to contain the expected crowd,” he said.
He said all journalists who would wish to cover the important event would be duly accredited to make their work easy.
Mr Anto further stated that plans were underway to telecast the event live on Ghana Television (GTV); while some radio stations had also indicated their intention to run live commentary.
The regional chairman emphasised that feverish preparations were ongoing to make the conference a success.
The national delegates’ conference to elect national executives for Ghana's biggest opposition party will be attended by 1,500 delegates.
Former President J.A. Kufuor is expected to address the conference, which the party sees as crucial towards its resolve to win back power in 2012.
The two leading contestants to the NPP flag bearer Position, Nana Akufo-Addo and Mr Alan Kyerematen, will also attend the conference. However, neither of them will give any speech.
