Hundreds of workers of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association demonstrating against the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure Thursday morning were involved in a scuffle with security men. The angry protesters were heading to the Castle to register their displeasure following the failure of the Fair Wages Commission to negotiate with them before the implementation of the new salary scheme which take effect this July. They insist they have the legal right to independently negotiate their salary, a position the Fair Wages Commission does not seem to share. The demonstrators were stopped by security personnel at the Independence Square several meters away from the seat of government. The security personnel say the Castle is a restricted area and would not allow angry demonstrators passage to the seat of government. But this was not accepted by the angry workers who cited several examples of demonstrators, including “market women” who have been allowed passage into the Castle to put their grievances before the president. This Joy FM’s Ebenezer Opoku said culminated into a confusion with the demonstrators engaging in a serious verbal confrontation with the police. “We are a disciplined, civil, and respected people who work for the government. We are not rioters,” one of the demonstrators yelled. The State Protocol, Opoku confirmed, brought a vehicle to convey six of the leaders of the demonstrators to the Castle where an amicable solution is expected to be reached. But this did not go down well with some of the workers who turned their anger on the leaders of the demonstrators and threatened to beat them up once they get back to the office.
