The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has warned that it would prosecute industries, hotels and factories, which do not have fire certificates for their premises. The Ghana News Agency quotes Assistant Chief Fire Officer of the GNFS, Nana Ekow Abban in an interview as saying that the Fire Prevention and Premises Bill, LI 1724 mandates the Service to inspect and issue fire safety certificates to both public and private property and institutions in the country. He said this would assist in reducing the increasing incidents of industrial and domestic fire outbreaks in the country. Mr. Abban who is also the Western Regional Fire Commander said the move was meant to ensure that fire safety was well maintained in all institutions, especially hospitality institutions and factories to prevent any fire outbreaks before, during and after the Ghana at 50 celebrations and the CAN 2008 tournament. Mr. Abban said all buildings must be constructed with suitable fire outlets and other gadgets to safeguard lives and property in case of a fire outbreak. He noted that with the onset of the harmattan season, palm wine tapers, farmers, game hunters and cigarette smokers should be careful not to start bush fires. Mr. Abban said farmers must engage the assistance of fire volunteers if they wish to burn their farms to prevent fire from spreading to other farms. He said rooms used for the storage of chemicals must be properly labeled to prevent accidental fire outbreaks. The GNFS Commander said a total of 57 fire outbreaks were recorded between July and November 2006 and destroyed property estimated at ¢810.74 million. He said in November alone 17 of the incidents being the highest, were recorded and property destroyed was valued at ¢116.140 million.
