The newly elected Presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says the party is determined to “stand as one and deliver a good victory for the NPP in the 2012 elections.”
That he said will depend on him and how he is able to accomodate views from the various stakeholder groups within the party.
Even though he attained a landslide victory in the expanded delegates conference of the party that elected him on Saturday, the new flag-bearer believes there are still pockets of delegates who did not vote for him but who must be brought together to execute a comprehensive campaign for the NPP.
Speaking to Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah on Monday, Nana Akufo-Addo said he will unite the party both at the top and the bottom for an effective campaign in 2012.
He said he is ready and prepared to work with all the other four candidates as a “joint enterprise” in the next election.
More importantly, he called on all polling station executives and grassroots members to eschew acts of division which he said will be detrimental in the party’s quest to return to power.
“We are ready to bring everybody on board to show by the way we conduct ourselves that we are determined to stand as one, work for the party and deliver a good victory for the party so that the NPP can get on with the historic mission of building the country as a free state and a state where there is prosperity for the ordinary person,” he said.
He also urged all supporters to work hard in the interest of the party, adding the “country must be put back into the hands of people who can perform.”
Nana Addo was also overwhelmed by the support he received during his campaign which translated into his massive endorsement.
"I am immensely humbled; I don’t think any NPP leader has ever got this kind of vote before," he said, adding, he is not going to disappoint the delegates.
According to him, he had barely six months to plan and execute the 2008 elections and believes the two-and-half years will afford him enough time to prepare a comprehensive campaign for the 2012 election.
He will meet the National Executives of the party on Tuesday to begin planning and strategizing ahead of the next election.
After that he will take a break; sleep; listen to radio and play some music and return very soon to the campaign ground.
