Third seed Angelique Kerber crashed out at the first round of Roland Garros with a 2-6 6-3 3-6 defeat at the hands of Kiki Bertens.
The German, who won the first Grand Slam of the year in Australia, struggled with an apparent injury and required a medical time out in the third set.
World number 58 Bertens did not let up and secured one of the biggest wins of her career.
