Policy think tank, Centre for Freedom and Accuracy has applauded the government’s decision to review the abolition of the bonded warehousing regime for importers.
The system allows importers to bring in finished goods but defer payments of duties on the goods for up to two years.
The government in the 2011 budget however scrapped it because it says it is adversely impacting its purse.
But Vice President John Mahama has said the government will likely vary the policy.
“Certainly you cannot achieve food security with a wave of the hand, you still need imported items and probably the bonded warehousing serve as a bit of security buffer stock.”
Executive Director of the policy think tank, Centre for Freedom and Accuracy, Andrew Awuni who had earlier appealed for the review, though welcomes the decision, called for a consultative forum to address it.
Mr Awuni said there was the need to put measures in place to ensure “that we would avoid the possibility of reviewing the review in the future.”
He wants the government to also take a second look at the import tariffs.
