A 54-year-old British counselor at the Ghana International School (GIS), Mary Maxine Selasie, who got involved in the narcotics business, has been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court together with her accomplices. With the exception of Maxine, who was not remanded into police custody the five others Nukunu Kwame Gakpetor, 48, Rashid Raman Kofi, 32, Moses Kudjo Gakpetor, 50, Kobla Amedzor Gakpetor, 42 and Seth Kwaku Agama, 48 were remanded into prison custody. The six would reappear at the court on December 10, 2010. The court also issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Joseph Atsu Selasie, Maxine’s husband, who is alleged to own the dried leaves suspected to be cannabis. Atsu is also alleged to own a courier service company, which he uses in the narcotics trade. Maxine, together with her accomplices, were arrested Saturday on November 20, 2010 together with five others at Tema following a tip-off that a drug cartel was operating in a cluster of houses at the Gulf City, Tema. Personnel from the Narcotics Unit were dispatched to the location where the suspects were arrested. During a spot check at the location, police retrieved a pump action gun with 130 live cartridges, a big jute bag containing dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, three smaller parcels and some polythene bags, all suspected to contain quality cannabis sativa (wee). Other things the police retrieved were a Toyota Highlander with registration number GT 9627-1O and some documents. The police are on the heels of Joseph Atsu Selasie, Maxine’s husband, who is believed to be the leader of the cartel but is currently on the run.
