Anti-corruption group, Ghana Integrity Initiative wants the government of Ghana to investigate leaked classified documents alleging high level involvement of government officials in the narcotics trade.
Key government officials have disputed the leaked US diplomatic cables published by whistle-blowing website, Wikileaks that President Mills is suspicious some members of his government may be smuggling drugs through the Presidential lounge at the Kotoka Airport.
The US Embassy in Accra will not confirm or deny the veracity of the information. Information Officer Ben East however condemns the disclosures.
He said any “unauthorized disclosures of classified information by Wikileaks has harmful implications for the lives of the identified individuals, puts [their lives] in jeopardy, puts in jeopardy our global engagement and global engagement among other nations.”
The Executive Secretary of the GII which is a local chapter of Transparency International, Vitus Azeem says the information disclosed by Wikileaks is worrying.
He told Joy News President Mills must take the matter seriously.
Mr Azeem said if the president suspects members of his government to be engaged in drugs business, it is important for him to order investigations to expose the persons involved.
Meanwhile Deputy Majority leader Rashid Pelpuo is urging commentators to be mindful about their comments on the subject.
He said denying or accepting the information gives credence to publication of information that is classified.
Particularly because the information concerns other countries, Mr Pelpuo stressed the need for circumspection.
