The acting Commissioner of the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Ms. Anna Bossman has waded into the controversy of homosexuality urging the public to respect rights of homosexuals in the country. Ms. Bossman who was speaking on Citi FM Tuesday said homosexuals should not be condemned based on the arguments of society’s morality and that Ghanaians must “respect the humanity in other people. Whatever your morality is, I would expect that people will respect your rights.” She bemoaned the state in which the public show hatred towards people who indulge in same sex, urging that Ghanaians must respect the rights of homosexuals as far as their sexual preferences and activities do not result in any constitutional infractions. “We are talking about fundamental human rights of people okay -freedom of choice. In as much as it is not criminal or it is not trampling on the rights of others, I think that we should respect it. You can be opposed to it but that does not give you the right to go and harm somebody or to go and do things that you are not supposed to do against that person,” she averred. Ms. Bossman added that if people are able to select a religion of their choice, there should be no reason why homosexuals should be prevented from indulging in a practice that does not contravene provisions in the constitutions. Ms. Bossman stated that “they [homosexuals] have chosen to be what they are. As long as they are not forcing themselves and doing all sorts of things [such as] peadophilia and whatever …as long as they are not doing that and they are doing it in the privacy of their own homes and it is consensual…why are you going to now bother these people. Once our constitution says freedom from discrimination, we should leave it at that.” She further counseled that people must desist from trying to harm citizens whose beliefs are against the cultural beliefs of Ghanaians. The acting head of the human rights outfit pointed out that preventing homosexuals from exercising their rights will be infringing on their fundamental human rights, adding “it doesn’t matter what you think is your view of the world.
