Parliamentary candidate of governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Weija Gbawe Constituency, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has donated an ambulance and medical equipment to the Ga South Municipal Hospital.

The items included wheelchairsand hospital beds was made in collaboration with the Lordina Mahama Foundation at a time when the aspiring Member of Parliamentary (MP) celebrated her 39th birthday.

At a ceremony held in Accra, she said  the absence of ambulance to aid in the transfer of patients in need of critical help, moved her to donate the items.

Presenting the ambulance, Obuobia Darko said during her last birthday she donated wheelchairs and white canes to persons with disabilities in the Constituency aimed at transforming their lives and to avoid any potential circumstance that ends them up on the streets as beggars.

According to her, earlier this year, she received a distress call from residents about a routine acute water shortage the Ga South Municipal Hospital was experiencing.

Mrs Darko-Opoku said she was touched to donate a 15,000 Iitre polytank to the hospital to mitigate the effect as a short term measure while a permanent solution to the problem was under consideration.

Receiving the equipment the Medial Director of the Hospital, Dr. Bright Davis Tetteh, praised the First Lady Lordina Mahama and Obuobia Darko for coming to the aid of the hospital.

He said the gesture will go a long way to save more lives and therefore appealed to corporate bodies to do same to equip the hospital in order to take care of the growing health needs of the people in the area.

The hospital which serves two constituencies in the Ga South Municipality has been operating without an ambulance and other medical equipment to administer sound and efficient health delivery for the surrounding communities.

The hospital rely on commercial transport to carry patients to specialist health facilities during emergencies which sometimes turned fatal.

Mrs Darko-Opoku has been criticised for her philanthropic character as her opponents  have described her activities as political expediency but she says they got it wrong.

"If I was doing this to achieve political points why should I continue when I lost the election four years ago she quizzed," 

She promised to continue to help in diverse ways in alleviating people’s problems.
