The National Road Safety Commission is calling for a review of the directive banning heavy duty trucks from using the roads after 6pm. The commission wants the police service to focus rather on strict enforcement of existing laws. The Inspector General of Police issued the directive in an apparent move to reduce accidents which have seen a rise in recent weeks. Director of Planning at the Road Safety Commission, May Obiri Yeboah, however says available records show more road accidents occur in the day than at night. She said about seventy per cent of accidents in the country occurred during the day and banning heavy duty vehicles from moving in the night was not a solution to the problem. What is even more of a concern for the commission, she said is that if all the heavy duty vehicles are forced to move during the day as a result of the directive, the roads will be congested, smaller vehicles will try more and more take-overs, and “we will now be recording a lot of head-on collisions.” She proposes alternative measures to check the movement of heavy duty trucks. She said all heavy duty trucks must be made to use retro-reflective tapes, believing that that will be strong signals to other road users. Source: Joy News/Ghana
