Liverpool's Champions League qualification is back in the balance after they were yet again left frustrated by a well-organised Saints team, who have now shut out Jurgen Klopp's men four times this season. James Milner had a second-half penalty saved by Fraser Forster and the keeper also came to his team's rescue with a last-minute save to deny Marko Grujic.
The home side dominated almost every aspect of the match but were unable to convert their superiority into the hard currency of goals.
And Milner, usually so measured from the spot, passed up a golden opportunity to give his side the lead after Jack Stephens was adjudged to have handled inside the box.
Liverpool continued to push for the winner but had to settle for a point that moves them back into third spot on 70 points.
