A teaching pro golfer at Tarkwa golf club Kojo Barnni beat West Africa's best golfer Vincent Torgah on sudden death to win Gold Fields Ghana PGA tour held at Damang Golf Course from Wednesday, November 29 to Saturday, December 2, 2017.
Both Golfers returned same score of 282 gross over four days after Vincent Torgah's magnificent-5 performance on the final day to match the leader Kojo Barnni who played-4 with Senegalese Samba Niang scoring-3.
After the sterling drive, swing, parting which brought the two to the same score, the rule required the two leaders go for sudden death to determine the winner. In the sudden death on hole 18, the defending champion Vincent Torgah shot +1 whilst Kojo Barnni played a level course of 4 to win the competition for the first time in the tournament's history.
Samba Niang from Senegal who placed third last year maintained his position this year playing 286, Achimota's Emos Korblah came fourth followed by Nigerian Sunday Olapade who led the leaderboard in opening day.
Mr Kojo Barnni was given GHS 25000.00 and also decorated with a jacket symbolizing the reigning Champion of the biggest professional golf tour in Ghana today.
Addressing the gathering Mr Tony Mintah, President of Ghana Professional Golfers Association thanked all golfers who came from far and near to honour Ghana PGA'S invitation especially professional players from Togo, Nigeria, Benin, Senegal, Cote D'Ivoire and Ahmed Padori who came all the way from the United Kingdom.
The affable president also said he and his executives are pushing hard to grow golf in the country through Senior High Schools and also get more competitions for Ghana pros to better their performance in other to get them participate in tours like Sunshine in South Africa, US open, British open, Europe, Asia and other world recognized golf open tours for pros.
The colourful ceremony also saw CEO of Gold Fields global Mr Nick Holland flown down at Damang by helicopter to grace the occasion, in his speech Mr Holland thanked the people of Damang for taking part and also supporting the project which is aimed at projecting professional golf in Ghana. He also appreciated the planning committee led by hard-working Mr Hans De Beer, Roger Adamah, the president of the club Mr Richard Daween, Captain Derek Amuakwah-Mensah and other members who in diverse ways of making the championship a memorable one.
