The General Secertary for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia says there is no law in the party that binds the Electoral Commission (EC) to certify election of its members.Mr. Asideu Nketia stated that there is nothing in the party’s constitution that gives the EC the mandate to have oversight responsibility of their internal elections.Mr. Asiedu Nketia made this statement on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Wednesday following the EC’s cancellation of the NDC Parliamentary election held at Atebubu Amanteng Consituency in the Brong Ahafo region last month.This followed a Sunyani High Court ruling that an earlier election held by the party was null and void.The Court had earlier ruled in favour of the beleaguered incumbent MP, Emmanuel Owusu Mainu, declaring an earlier election in which he lost by 19 votes to the District Chief Executive (DCE), Sanja Nanja, null and void.The judgment was delivered in default after the Electoral Commission (EC), which was the defendant in the case, failed to appear before the court after several sittings.The embattled MP claimed that the total votes increased by one (from 531 to 532) after counting and therefore he believed that the EC had connived with the DCE to rig the elections.The development had created tension among party followers in the constituency, as supporters of both men were said to be trading insults.Responding to this, the NDC General Secretary stated that the party is not obliged to invite the EC to monitor their internal elections.Mr. Asiedu Nketia therefore said the party had not received any court directive restraining the winning candidate, because the plaintiff -Owusu-Mainu- did not include the NDC or the other contestant in the law suit.He maintained that as far as the party was concerned, the winner is the party’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency.
