Ghana’s Hor Halutie has said her achievement at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, came as a big surprise to her.
The 19-year-old sprinter reached the final of the women’s 100m but could only finish eighth. Despite the poor finish, she was widely praised by Ghanaians.
And Halitue, who arrived in the country on Friday, reveals she least expected to perform that way on her debut international competition.
According to her, she was billed to compete only in the 4X100m event but got to know that she will be featuring in the women 100m race three days to the start of the competition.
‘’I had the lowest qualification time(11:41 seconds) compared to female athletes in Team Ghana so I could only race in the 4X100m,'' Halutie told Citi TV.
''But I was informed my time was good enough for the 100m race and although I had not prepared for it, I accepted the challenge.'' ''I am happy I was able to repay the trust the [athletics association] had in me to take me to Australia.''
Ahead of the Games, the alumni of T.I. Ahmaddiya Secondary School in Kumasi was least expected to excel.
But her persistence and determination ensured she outperformed experience sprinters Fling Owusu Agyapong and Gemma Acheampong and became Ghana's brightest hope of landing a medal in the track event.
