Over fifty boys and girls from selected schools in Kumasi were, on Tuesday, introduced to the game of squash at a clinic organized by the 4 Garrison Officers Mess Club. The excited youngsters, aged between 4 and 15 assembled on the court very early, in anticipation of playing squash game for the first time. It turned out to be a memorable occasion for the children as they had opportunity to meet President Akufo Addo and his vice, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The President and his Vice advised the kids on the importance of healthy life through sporting activities. President Akufo Addo who was once a member of the 4 Garrison Officers Mess Squash Club , appreciated executives for introducing children to the game at such early age. Captain for the Club, Lawyer Francis Cofie wants more support from government to make the game more popular. “The future of squash is bright given the enthusiasm shown by the kids. Even though there are activities marked on national calendar of sports for squash, yet there is nothing being done on the ground to show,” he said. Executives of 4 Garrison Officers Mess Squash Club are encouraging the young ones to develop interest in the game, usually referred to as one of the lesser known sporting disciplines in Ghana. The one day event was sponsored by Geodrill. Chief Operating Officer, Richard Cofie says the company plans to help promote some lesser known sports in the country. “We have taken it upon ourselves to build interest in kids, let them know that there are other sports there and then get people to represent Ghana in International Squash Competition,” he said.
