First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has called for increased action to augment the gains made in the efforts towards gender equality.
She says a sustained action towards seeing women play functional roles at various stages of the governance structure will depict an action-oriented effort.
She said, “thankfully, under the visionary leadership of President Akufo-Addo, who is recognised as a Gender Champion by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Ghana now has 27 percent of women in ministerial positions."
According to her, the President's appointment of some women holding key positions such as Chief of Staff, Chief Justice and Secretary to Cabinet is a testimony of that.
Mrs Akufo-Addo, however, conceded that though giant strides have been made in the multi-dimensional struggle for gender parity, a lot still needs to be done.
“I am therefore glad that Awesome Treasures Foundation is in the business of developing leaders through the message of the gospel,” she added.
The First Lady was addressing participants at the Awesome Treasures Leading Ladies Summit in Accra on Saturday.
Appreciating the efforts of the Awesome Treasures Foundation, Mrs Akufo-Addo said it is very essential that men and women of faith will engage in a free exchange of ideas, on how we can advance the cause of women on our continent.
“As we are all aware, the bonds of sisterhood are critical to our collective agenda to promote the causes of women. It is the African way to rely on the bonds of sisterhood.
"I dare say this is one reason why Awesome Treasures Foundation has been so successful for eighteen years,” she stated.
She charged participants to exert their positions as mothers to our communities and leaders in every sector of corporate and national life and rise to support each other.
The First Lady stressed, “through this, we may together achieve the peace and prosperity, we desire for our nations.”
The event was hosted by Olajumoke Adenowo an Outstanding Female African Architect, VVLEAD Fellow, Philanthropist, Founder Awesome Treasures Foundation and Juror on Cartier Initiative Awards.
Among the Participants were Josephine Nkrumah, Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education in Ghana, Charlotte Osei, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana and Claudia Lumor of Glitz Africa Magazine.
