Namibia has officially passed the mantle to Cameroon as hosts of the next edition of the African Women Championship (AWC) in 2016.
The symbolic handover of the flag of the Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) to the host of the next edition of a tournament was amongst others the key moments during the closing ceremony of the TN Mobile 9th African Women Championship 2014 which ended on Saturday with Nigeria claiming a record, extending seventh title.
It started with Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of the Namibia 2014 Championship, Sivhute Katamba, passing the CAF flag to president of the Namibia Football Association (NFA) John Muinjo, then to CAF President, Issa Hayatou, who in turn handed over to the Minister of Sport and Physical Education of Cameroon, Adoum Garoua to complete the cycle.
Cameroon will host the 2016 edition of the showpiece continental women’s football championship.
Previous hosts include Nigeria (1998, 2002, 2006), South Africa (2000, 2004, 2010) and Equatorial Guinea (2008, 2012).
