Deputy Central Regional Minister, Thomas Adjei-Baffoe has rejected suggestions that the President Akufo-Addo is under pressure to visit a town where a soldier was lynched.
He told NHYIRA FM'S Ohemeng Tawiah, the President is in the town to appreciate the residents for handing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) victory in the December 2016 polls.
"Upper Denkyira [West] has been our stronghold over the years. Since 1996, we've held this seat and we find it necessary to be here to thank the people of Denkyira for voting for the NPP every year and that's why we are here".
Denkyira Obuasi was at the butt end of national outrage after a commander of a military detachment there, Major Maxwell Adam Mahama was lynched on May 29, 2017, by a mob.
Since then, the residents have been pleading with the President to visit the town stereotyped by the lynching. The DCE Daniel Appianin was suspended by the President for making unguarded comments following the lynching.
The President has begun his six-day tour of the Western and Central regions and is expected to make a stop in the town.
The Deputy Central Regional Minister who also doubles as the acting District Chief Executive for Upper Denkyira West, explained the visit was arranged by the Regional Minister after he went to the Flagstaff House to throw an invitation to the President to come to the region.
"The program was planned by myself and my Regional Minister. We felt that it is important that the President visits the place and when we sent an invitation to the Flagstaff House, the president said 'yeah, I would be here'" the Deputy Minister said.
He said the visit will also allow the president to assess the town which many fled after the military descended there following the Major's murder.
