The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) says it has uncovered a suspected syndicate involved in the production and issuance of fake marriage certificates to unsuspecting members of the public.
The fraudulent operation was discovered after a client’s marriage certificate, allegedly obtained through the syndicate, was rejected by a foreign embassy during a visa application due to inconsistencies. The matter was subsequently reported to the AMA, prompting internal checks.
Confirming the development, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, stated that the Assembly has launched an investigation and referred the case to the Ghana Police Service for further action.
He explained that preliminary findings revealed that the individuals behind the act had been forging marriage certificates while posing as officials responsible for facilitating marriage registrations at the AMA.
“The Assembly has detected these fraudulent activities and immediately handed the matter over to the Police for a full-scale investigation,” Mr. Ankrah stated.
Mr. Ankrah cautioned the public to deal directly with the AMA’s official Marriage Registry and avoid using intermediaries or unofficial agents when seeking marriage registration services.
