A Political Science lecturer at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) says leadership discretion, more than a law, is what the country needs to address the imbalance in political appointments.

Dr Mohammed Abass says National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) allegations of nepotism against the Akufo-Addo’s government is a matter of concern.  but indicates it is not a worrying situation.

He told Luv FM’s David Akuetteh, that “when we are worried about it, it takes us into the negative that leads to unnecessary utterances, but we should be concerned about it.”

According to him, it is when the citizenry is concerned about the issue that people will be objective and non-partisan when addressing it.

The opposition NDC at a press conference on Tuesday presented names of persons it says are relatives and cronies within the Akufo-Addo government.

The party’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, listed 51 names of relatives and cronies which he said pointed to “classic and unprecedented” nepotism within the Akufo-Addo government.

The NDC further called for the enactment of anti-nepotism legislation to check abuse of power by governments.

But Mr Abass argued that the question people should be asking is whether those “appointed are they delivering or not because the name of the game is results.”

He said nepotism is not new to the political system of Ghana, because it has existed since the country became a Republic and Nkrumah took over affairs from the colonial administration.

“I do not think it is fair to discriminate against people who have the competence but simply because they are close to the source of power then they shouldn’t get there. Anytime they get there, it means there is a problem.”

“We should be careful because they are all citizens and as a state, we must be able to use all our resources to get the best for the state,” he added.
