Ghanaian hiplife artiste and rapper, Maradona Yeboah Adjei, popularly known as Guru, has stated that artistes can never be managed.
According to him, it is the work of the musician that can be managed and not the individual artiste.
In a conversation with Ib Ben-Bako on Prime Morning on Friday, the rapper explained that most artistes sometimes get distracted by managers as they may want to make decisions contrary to the managers’ interests.
"In music, you can never manage an artiste. You can manage part. That’s the work itself, but not the brand of the artiste…If I say I cannot be managed, it’s because mentally I’ve already psyched myself not letting anything distract me," he stated.
Guru believes it is impossible for an artiste to be successful if his or her vision does not correspond with the people surrounding their music career.
He indicated that most artistes are facing difficulties with their managers due to misunderstandings.
He said, "Most of the artistes facing those challenges with their managers is because of lack of understanding and self-interest."
The "Alkayida (Boys Abre)" hitmaker disclosed that he does not trust the people he is currently working with.
Also, Guru stated that the majority of Ghanaian music industry players are led by emotions in the performance of their duties.
According to him, most upcoming musicians are struggling to develop their music careers due to the emotional nature of the industry players.
"Sometimes we intend to 'switch' you for no reason, depending on emotions, and we act too much based on emotions. So if you’re not mentally strong, they’ll cut you off," he stated.
The rapper has released a new single titled "Enko Yie." According to him, the song is an inspiration for the pressures of life he is dealing with.
However, in a related development, entertainment journalist and talent manager, Edem Tsortome, is of the view that artistes create problems for managers, making it difficult for them to be managed.
"At times, the artistes become a very huge problem for the Management. You want to go this way and within a short space of time you’ve planned something and the artiste had a 'switch' of mind and everything is distracted," the talent manager explained.
Additionally, he stated that, "they make things difficult to be managed. So when it happens this way and you don’t have a big heart, you’ll have to leave the artistes and they'll push on their own. "
However, Edem Tsortome applauded award schemes for recognizing the efforts of musicians. He urged various organisations to strive for integrity.
