Officials of the Electoral Commission supervising Tuesday’s parliamentary by-election in the Atiwa Constituency of the Eastern Region say they are ready for a clean, transparent and peaceful poll.
District Electoral Officer for Atiwa, Victoria Yakubu told Joy News’ Benjamin Tetteh who is covering the election that the district office has received all materials for the exercise while personnel have also been duly deployed to the various polling stations in the constituency.
The district offices of the Electoral Commission at Kwabeng was the centre of attention Sunday as representatives of the four political parties contesting the elections thronged the EC office to monitor deployment of voting materials to the 113 polling stations across the constituency. The exercise continued Monday.
From the District Police Headquarters at Anyinam to the EC offices, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), who with the New Vision Party (NVP) witnessed the handing over of the materials to the EC officers, followed the pick-up carrying the electoral materials all the way to the EC district office.
At the EC office, all four parties- the ruling National Democratic Congress, People’s National Convention, NPP and the NVP keenly monitored the transportation of materials to the polling stations.
Party representatives asked questions and took details of the serial numbers of ballot papers and are expected to cross-check the materials at each polling station Tuesday morning before the poll kicks off at 7am. Voting will close at 5pm.
The police have promised to deploy 1,200 personnel to police the process and ensure it runs peacefully and successfully.
The Atiwa by-election follows the death of Mr. Kwasi Annoh Ankamah, NPP MP for the area after a short illness.
