Spokesperson for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, Nana Akomea, says separating the Vice President’s official duties from his campaign activities will be a very difficult task.
According to him, currently, while there is an attempt to ensure a level-playing field for all candidates in the upcoming New Patriotic Party presidential primaries, the lines between the Vice President’s official duties and his personal campaign activities have been blurred.
He said even though the Vice President has ensured that for his campaign purposes he uses his own vehicles among others, he often has to perform official duties along the way as well, thus there cannot be a clear divorce of the two.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, he said, “It is always going to be difficult to completely divorce or separate his function as Vice president and his campaign activity. Doing it will be difficult. But every effort will be made, because I know that he has rented his own bus.
“His main campaign vehicle is a bus that he has rented, and all of us sit in the bus as we move from one constituency to the other. We have lunch in the bus, we all get our takeaways and we eat in the bus and put it in the bin. But he’ll be entitled to his security because he’s still the vice president.
“On many instances during the tours when the president is out of this country, he’s the acting president. So, it’ll be a little difficult to completely separate the two functions. I know about Tamale, that he’s going there to perform his official function.”
He stated that while the separation of the two roles currently seem difficult, he is hoping that in the near future there are guidelines on how such a separation can be achieved.
“So, it’s a situation where you can’t completely separate the two functions. But as we go ahead in our democratic development, I would like a situation where the rules are more clearly and more definitely written so that we know where the lines are,” he said.
