The Black Queens of Ghana, maintaining their status as Africa’s second best behind the Super Falcons of Nigeria, are engaged in action in the ongoing Women’s World Cup against their Australian opponents on Wednesday in a Group C game.
Twice have the two sides met at the same level in the past; 1999 and 2003, with the Queens drawing the first 1:1 and winning the other 2:1.
But the Queens have just had their stakes in the Women’s World Cup raised a notch higher, following a disappointing 5:0 drubbing handed by their male counterparts, the Black Stars by their Saudi opponents on Tuesday evening.
The Black Stars had earlier on Saturday won (not too convincingly though) 2:0 against the Atlas Lions of Morocco and were expected to make mince of the Saudi Arabia challenge, however, the stars approach and commitment levels to the game left a sour taste in the mouth of all followers of the otherwise high-flying team.
Vital lessons were easily available; and among them a patently obvious killer of previously invincible sides – complacency.
The Stars were just complacent, somewhat expectant that victory was sure to come their way notwithstanding their output.
Thankfully, the dismal performance came in the nick of time for the Queens, who must quickly shed any trappings of the ‘football disease’ going into action with vital wins over Nigeria and South Africa.
The Queens’ line up has a lot of World Cup veterans; Gladys ENTI, Mavis DANSO, Memunatu SULEMANA, Lydia ANKRAH, Yaa AVOE, Adjoa BAYOR, Sheila OKAI, Florence OKOE and host of fairly experienced players who should be able to blend with new limbs to see off the Australian challenge to go beyond the first round of the tournament.
Norway and Canada are the other nations the Queens must play to qualify for the second round.
