The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has released the Pharmacist at the Goaso Government hospital in the Brong Ahafo region, after detaining him for four days.

Agyeman Badu voluntarily honoured an invitation from the BNI last Friday morning, to assist with investigations into some expired pharmaceutical products but was detained and released Monday evening.

He told Joy News that a-four-member panel interrogated him on Friday but when he insisted on having his lawyer around before making any further comment, he was taken into a room and detained.

According to Mr. Badu, the officers queried him for dispensing expired products to a patient and for buying products from Tobinco Pharmaceutical company, a company they claimed had been blacklisted by the FDA.

He said the expired product was not dispensed by him but by his subordinate and therefore had to take ultimate responsibility.

The embattled pharmacist further noted that none of the products of Tobinco Pharmaceuticals in his possession had expired adding, that all the Tobinco products he had were procured long before the running battle between the pharmaceutical company and the Food and Drugs Authority  began.

Even though the constitution granted the BNI and other law enforcement agencies the power to detain suspects for 48 hours, Agyeman Badu said he was detained for more than the 48 hours with the explanation from one of the BNI officials that week-ends were not part of the mandatory 48 hours.

He stated however that he was not manhandled in anyway by the officials but was cajoled at some point to eat, when he decided to go on a temporary hunger strike.

Agyeman Badu said he was not charged for any crime during his detention but indicated that he would have to consult all relevant stakeholders before he could take any action against the BNI.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana has expressed disappointment over the conduct of the BNI.

President of the Society, James Ohemeng Kyei, said the BNI had no right to detain their colleague for that number of days. He also told Joy News that the BNI should have charged Agyeman Badu and taken him to court if they found his conduct offending to the law.

He therefore described the action of the BNI officials as unacceptable.
