The Director of Elections and Research for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Evans Nimako, has denied assertions that the party will impose candidates on delegates in its upcoming primaries.
Speaking on JoyNews' The Probe, he gave an assurance that all candidates will be given equal opportunity to participate in the NPP primaries which will be held ahead of the 2024 elections.
"We are not per this internal arrangement imposing candidates on any constituency. Any polling station and the party leadership is resolved to ensure that we select or elect our leaders based on our rules of engagement," he said.
He said this as part of conversations on how the NPP intends to 'Break the eight,' with its re-organisation strategy.
His comments were in reaction to accusations that the party's leadership is imposing candidates on electorates.
He used the opportunity to deny the assertion and indicated that candidates will be selected "based on consensus."
He further entreated the general public, especially NPP supporters, to throw their weight behind the party to ensure a one-time victory in the upcoming election.
"Come 2024, the good people of Ghana would give the NPP the mandate to continue the governance of this country but this requires the participation of all party members to conduct themselves in a manner that will give hope to the people of Ghana," he said.
The NPP, after securing victory in the 2020 Presidential election, has been looking forward to winning the 2024 election as well.
Since the inception of the Fourth Republic, no political party has exceeded two tenures in office.
The ruling party, nonetheless, is determined to be the first party to achieve such a feat, hence, the mantra ‘Breaking the Eight.’
Many names, including that of Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, have popped up as candidates qualified to help the ruling party achieve this aim.
The Vice President has pledged to support the party attain victory in 2024 irrespective of who leads the party.
