The University of Ghana (UG) have booked their place in the final of the 2026 Honda Football Championship after defeating the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) on penalties in a fiercely contested semi-final clash.
Match Day Four of the competition lived up to expectations as the semi-finals got underway at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, with fans treated to an intense and tactical encounter.
The game, which kicked off at 4:30pm, saw both sides display discipline and determination, with neither team willing to concede ground. Chances were limited as both defences held firm, forcing the match into a stalemate after regulation time.
Even after an additional 20 minutes of extra time, the deadlock remained unbroken, sending the contest to a penalty shootout to determine a winner.
UENR endured a difficult start to the shootout, missing their opening kick to hand UG an early advantage. The Legon-based side capitalised on the opportunity, converting all four of their penalties with composure.
UG goalkeeper Adinan Abdul Fatawu proved decisive in the shootout, producing a crucial save to deny UENR’s third attempt and effectively end their hopes of progressing.
UG ultimately secured victory in the shootout to advance to the final of the competition.
They will now face the winner of the second semi-final between the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) and the University of Development Studies (UDS).
The 2026 Honda Football Championship is powered by Honda and Overseas Union Ltd, the sole distributors of Honda Motorcycles in Ghana, and is produced by RITE Sports Services.
