President John Mahama has been honoured with the International Statesperson Award by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, in recognition of his contributions to global leadership, democratic governance, and international diplomacy.
The award, presented at a ceremony on Friday, March 27, 2026, is the highest honour conferred by the Council.

Instituted in 1973, it is reserved for distinguished global leaders whose work advances peace, freedom, and leaves a lasting impact on world affairs.
President Mahama’s recognition marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the first African leader to receive the prestigious award since its inception.

Speaking at the ceremony, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Lauren Swartz, praised President Mahama’s record of leadership, noting that his career reflects the core values the award seeks to celebrate.
She highlighted his commitment to democratic governance, his role in promoting peaceful political transitions, and his efforts to strengthen international partnerships and advance economic and regional development.

She also commended his global advocacy for Africa.
In his acceptance remarks, President Mahama attributed his dedication to global peace and development to the enduring legacy of Africa’s pioneering leaders, including Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, and Kenneth Kaunda.

He said their vision and sacrifices continue to inspire his leadership and commitment to advancing unity, justice, and development on the continent and beyond.

The recognition further cements Ghana’s growing influence on the global stage and underscores the country’s continued role in shaping international discourse on governance and development.
