The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) has rejected the nomination of Ernest Arthur as the Municipal Chief Executive.
According to sources, the President's nominee polled 34 out of the 65 valid votes cast, representing 47.6 percent on Monday, September 27.
In all, the Assembly made up of 45 elected members and 21 appointees with one reported dead, failed to give the former MCE the required two-thirds majority as stipulated in the Local Government Act to ensure his endorsement.
Earlier, members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Cape Coast Metropolis had made a passionate appeal to President Akufo-Addo not to re-nominate the sitting MCE.
Among other things, the group had accused him of poor performance, poor human relations and the use of abusive language.
The NPP members and sympathizers who claimed to be the kingmakers of the Party in Cape Coast North and South Constituencies noted that they will accept any candidate who has applied for the position of MCE in Cape Coast Metropolis but not Mr. Ernest Arthur and Mr. Lawyer Daniel Arthur.
At a press conference held at Abura Central Market in the Cape Coast North Constituency, members of the party noted that their MCE's poor human relations also affected the NPP during the 2020 general elections.
Speaking after the counting of the votes, the Cape Coast Metro Electoral Officer, Richard Asenso, who supervised the polls, said voting would be conducted again within 10 days.
Meanwhile, the election was graced by Mrs Justina Marigold Assan, the Central Regional Minister, Mr Thomas Adjei Baffoe, former Deputy Central Regional Minister, Mrs Barbrah Asher Ayisi, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape Coaat North, and Mr Kweku Ricketts Hagan, MP for Cape South and former Minister of Finance.
