Coastal Television, a private commercial television operating from the Central regional capital, Cape Coast, Sunday had its main studios completely destroyed by fire suspected to have started from faulty electrical wires.
All equipment at the studios was destroyed in the blaze that also burnt the roofing completely.
Owners of the TV station are yet to assess the cost of damage, expected to run into millions of Ghana cedis.
The administrator of the TV station located at Pedu, Papa Nyame, told Joy News correspondent Richard Kojo Nyarko he was in his office just about 5pm when technicians came to inform him that electrical power supply to the studios had gone off. He said he could also hear some noise from the electricity meters and therefore instructed that all the mains be shut down.
“One of the mains started smoking and we used the fire extinguishers trying to quench the fires but it wasn’t going off. All of a sudden they (fires) have gone deep down into the studios … and started burning the studios and we called the fire service to come in but by the time the fire service got here, the whole studio was razed down. There was no single item which was rescued.
According to Mr. Nyame, personnel from the Fire Service were at the TV station within 10 minutes however, their efforts could not save the situation.
