The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has called for inclusion of representative from the council in a committee of enquiry, set up to investigate the recent shooting incident involving the police and some drivers of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) at Ashaiman on June 3, 2008.
A statement signed by Mr. Naveh-Fio Bright, General Secretary of GRTCC, said representation of the drivers on the committee would make its findings more credible and acceptable to all the stakeholders.
It said "The Council was the umbrella body coordinating all commercial transport unions in the country of which the GPRTU was a subset. It would be recalled that when the incident happened on June 3, the drivers sent the news to the council.
The council quickly called an emergency meeting the following day to discuss the issue together with the national executives of GPRTU".
The statement said the council sent a delegation to Ashaiman to meet the drivers and to cool down tempers and also assured its members that it would call for in-depth investigations into the incident to come out with the truth.
It said the council met with the Asaiman Police and interacted with the Tema Police Commander and the Tema Assistant Police Commander and promised them that the GRTCC was going to talk to the drivers.
The statement urged the Ministry of Interior to take a second look at the structure and composition of the committee.
