On the occasion of Armistice Day 2014 and to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, the diplomatic missions of France, Germany, United Kingdom, United States, Australia and Canada, in concert with the Government of Ghana, will co-host the screening of Apocalypse: World War I.
Apocalypse: World War I, directed by Isabelle Clarke and Daniel Costelle, is an epic and exceptional historical work documenting the horrors of the Great War from over 500 hours of archival footage, most of it previously unseen and now completely colourised thanks to modern technology. Each episode takes us into the battlefields and inside the minds of soldiers and generals, as well as civilians and their daily lives, during that period.
A private reception to launch the commemoration will take place at Alliance Francaise on Wednesday 12 November, followed by the screening (free entry) of the first episode of Apocalypse: World War I at 7.30pm. Episodes 2 and 3 of Apocalypse: World War I will then be screened at the British Council on Wednesday 19 November at 7pm. The two final episodes will be screened at the Goethe Institute on Wednesday 26 November at 7pm. Finally, the multi award nominee film, Joyeux Noel, will be screened at the Goethe Institute on 3 December at 7pm.
"The one hundredth anniversary of the start of World War I reminds us to honour the millions who fought and sacrificed their lives in defence of the values we cherish today, including the many heroic African soldiers who were shoulder to shoulder with Canadians and other allies in the cause of freedom", noted Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, Christopher Thornley, on behalf of the hosting missions.
