Certain roads in the Atiwa District of the Eastern Region have been awarded on contract to some contractors without the knowledge of the District Chief Executive nor any assembly member.The Atiwa District Chief Executive, Osei Agyapong, said that some of the contractors have also abandoned their projects since 2004 without any justification.He said that one of such projects is the 2km stretch of the Muoso-Akrofufu road which was awarded before the 2004 election.This came to light when the Eastern Regional Minister, Kwadwo Afram Asiedu, inspected such roads in the district on Monday to have an up-to-date information on the roads in the district.He said that some of the contracts were signed and awarded in Accra without notifying the district or the regional capital, which he said, made it impossible for them to trace the source of those contracts."We only see the contractors working on the roads and it is only when we question them before they introduce themselves to us."Mr Agyepong said that the district assembly has no capacity to do any thing about the deplorable and abandoned roads and therefore appealed to the government to intervene, saying that most of the roads were started even before the year 2000.Some of the roads inspected were the 3.5km Anyinam railway station to Accra Village road, Abomosu to Asunafo (9.6km), Abomosu to Awosoase (9.8km), Anyinam to Kwaben and the Erkoso, Akropong and the Tumfa roads.The regional minister said some of the contractors are working hard in the region while others are making things very difficult.He appealed to the contractors who have abandoned their work to reconsider their decision.Mr Asiedu said that one of the aims of the inspection was to see what was happening so that he could take the necessary action against the contractors who had failed to do their job.He also said that the Regional Coordinating Council would soon call a meeting with all the contractors in the region to find out their grievances.Source: The Ghanaian Times
