A Magistrate court in Accra has adjourned to Friday, a ruling on a bail application from lawyers of Gerald Afoko who is standing trial for the acid attack that killed the Upper East Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party.
The magistrate Worlanyo Kotoku had to adjourn the case because the state prosecutor was absent, Joy News' Kwakye Afreh Nuamah reported.
It is not clear yet why the prosecutor failed to turn up but Afreh-Nuamah confirms it had nothing to do with the ongoing strike by the lawyers at the Attorney Generals Department.
Gregory Afoko, brother of the NPP Chairman Paul Afoko has been charged with murder following the horrific death of the Upper East NPP Chair Adams Mahama.
The late Mahama was attacked on May 20, 2015 with acid by two men one of whom is suspected to be Gregory Afoko. He died the following day at the Bolgatanga hospital from complications caused by the acid.
The motive for the attack is yet to be ascertained but Mahama was reported to have had some disagreements with the NPP chairman Paul Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong days before the attack.
One more suspect in the murder was also picked by the police and is assisting with investigation. Issah Musah, a driver, known to be an NPP member is said to have procured the acid that was used by the first and third suspects in the tragic midnight attack on the late NPP chair.
The third suspect Asabke Alangdi, is however on the run. He was said to have bolted with his wife when he heard of the arrest of Gregory Afoko. The couple left behind their one-and-half-year-old baby, police reported.
Lawyers for Afoko have denied the charge of murder leveled against their client and are seeking bail for him.
Under the country's laws murder offences are not bailable but lawyers for Gregory Afoko insist their client is innocent of the charges leveled against him and must be granted bail.
The Magistrate is expected to rule on the bail application on July, 10, 2015.
