Spokesperson for ex-President Jerry Rawlings has denied allegations that he manipulated institutions of state in the case involving a New Patriotic Party activist alleged to have called the ex-president an arsonist.
Nana Darkwa was arrested by the police Thursday morning after he stated categorically that ex-president Rawlings was responsible for torching his own residence on Sunday.
He was subsequently arraigned before a circuit court on the same day and remanded in prison custody for two weeks.
Even though he has been released on bail Friday afternoon, critics, mostly the opposition NPP have accused the government of manipulating the institutions of state to silence critics.
There have been allegations that, Mr Adams handed over a note to the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, Rose Bio-Atinga, shortly after which Nana Darkwa was hauled to the court.
But in an interview with Joy News, Kofi Adams dismissed the allegations, describing them as untrue and unfounded.
“Beyond reporting and writing my statement, I did not speak to anybody; I did not go to the court; I do not even know which court; I don’t even know the judge who sat on the case, I don’t even know the law under which he was charged. The police, following their investigations and possibly the confession by the gentleman himself decided to take the action that they took,” he stated.
According to him, his decision to report the case to the police was only informed by the challenge thrown by Darkwa to him.
“I did not act on behalf of the National Democratic Congress as a party… I took this matter up because the gentleman who made this comment challenged me to come and face him.”
He said it was necessary to pick up Nana Darkwa to assist the police in unraveling the mystery behind the burnt residence of ex-President Rawlings.
Mr Adams also dismissed claims that he and the police over-reacted on the matter, explaining that was the only alternative given the emphasis of Darkwa's allegations.
He said he could not take the matter to the National Media Commission nor write a rejoinder, the only option was to seek redress at the law courts.
