Ghanaian midfielder Derek Boateng has been voted Player of the Year of by supporters of Spanish top flight side Getafe.
The 27-year-old overwhelmingly swept the votes ahead of some of the club’s more established players.
This is a major boost for Boateng just two days after he was handed a recall to the Ghana national team ahead of the 2010 World Cup next month.
He was presented with the award by the head of the Getafe’s fans’ club at the weekend and spent the night in the stands to fraternize with the fans.
His performances this season have led to serious interest from rival Spanish sides Sevilla and Valencia with some English clubs also said to be keen on him.
He joined the club at the beginning of the season from FC Cologne and was presented with the award moments before they beat Malaga 2-1 on Saturday to leave them one win away from qualifying for the Europa League.
The Ghanaian has settled well in Spain, making 29 appearances, three of them as a substitute during his first season in a defensive midfield position.
Boateng will now turn his attention on joining the Ghana squad ahead of the World Cup in June.
