A law lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, has called on President John Mahama to take firm and decisive action following the recent controversy involving the CEO of Goldbod, Mr Sammy Gyamfi.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, May 10, and was widely shared on social media, shows Mr Gyamfi handing cash to Nana Agradaa after a brief interaction. The footage has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for political accountability.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, Professor Appiagyei-Atua said that although he would not presume to dictate presidential action, strong leadership was essential to demonstrate the government’s commitment to ethical governance.
"I cannot really say what the President should do, but if I were to be in the position of the President, I would’ve wanted to set a strong precedent by asking for his dismissal," he said.
He further suggested that, if dismissal was deemed too harsh, a temporary suspension accompanied by a clear public statement could still send a powerful message to the public.
"But if that is a little bit too far, at least some suspension and making a public statement about it will be very important, so that people will know that the President is serious about his word," he added.
Prof Appiagyei-Atua acknowledged that the final decision rests with President Mahama, but stressed that even a reassignment could serve to reinforce accountability within the party.
"I leave it in the hands of the President — it is his discretion to take any decision he thinks is appropriate. But I think to send a strong message, he should be dismissed from office. Maybe they can find another position for him," he concluded.
