The Mental Health Authority (MHA) has advised Ghanaians against stressing themselves to meet expectations that come with the Christmas festivities.
In a press statement signed by Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Akwasi Osei, the Authority noted that such acts "could negatively affect our mental health."
The Authority stated that the festivities could lead to one being reminded of lost friends and relatives or worry over lack of resources to enjoy the yuletide. The statement noted however, that it is important to remind ourselves that "the greatest gift, the gift of life" has been granted by God.
"It is our wish that you strengthen your mental backbones in this joyous but stressful period, so you will be able to withstand the stress of the yuletide. Everything else is secondary. Be happy and spread the happiness to keep your mental health," it added.
The MHA also urged the well to do in society to be measured in the expression of their joy and extend some love to the needy.
Members of the general public have also been urged to be measured in their celebration and adhere to the safety protocols to ensure the country is not hit by another wave of the Covid-19 pandemic next year.
"We also recommend that Ghanaians be mindful of our activities during the yuletide, bearing in mind the fast spreading Omicron virus. As you celebrate and share love, be mindful of the need to protect your life and those of your loved ones. Observe the Covid-19 protocols in all your activities.
"We wish all Ghanaians the best of the season and do remember that there is no health without mental health. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year," the Authority concluded.
